These “products” also gave me lots of opportunities to use hand rendered lettering.

There’s lots of examples of illustrations where I’ve used hand rendered type (eg bargain basement series) but here are some more examples of my hand lettered illustrations used in a variety of contexts.

I love type and often incorporate it in some form into my illustrations. My interest in typography led me to undertake a course on traditional sign writing during the Covid lockdown. Since then I have dabbled with it and undertaken a few commissions. I particularly like to create the illusion of three dimensional letters with bevels and shadows.

Inspired by a recent visit to a tacky gift shop in Spain, I decided to create a series of “gifts”. Some of the items do actual exist in real life, others are figments of my imagination.

A series of drawings on the theme of ghosts.

A book cover for The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah. The novel is set in France during the Second World War and focuses on the lives of two sisters and their quite different experiences of it . We see the impact war from a female perspective. One sister becomes involved with the resistance, whilst the other who has children to look after contends with all the difficulties of being a single parent and sheltering children from the Nazis.

A couple of illustrations about urban gardening. The idea here was to use the shape and form of vases and flowerpots to make buildings.

An illustration for the Financial Times Books section. The illustration accompanies an article about the novel Big Kiss Bye-Bye by Claire- Louise Bennett. The narrator of the novel is a woman who has moved to the countryside. She contemplates her former life and is surrounded by memories of her past lovers.
